Install Estonian e-ID Software on Qubes OS in a Fedora 29 VM

After receiving my Estonian e-ID, I have been asked to visit their welcome page to set up my new digital identity card. To my surprise, some Windows software is shown to be required in order for the card reader to function. No word on available Linux packages, no easily discoverable information in the FAQ to lead me to the right place. Come on Estonia, you can do better! The world does not run on Windows solely, it's not 1998 anymore.

F-Droid repository for Trustroots

There are happy folks out there that do not (wish to) use the proprietary Play Store to receive their (android) phone applications from. A great alternative is F-Droid, "an installable catalogue of FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) applications for the Android platform".

Due to various technological reasons, the Trustroots app currently cannot be integrated into the "official" F-Droid repository. But fear no more, F-Droid by design has been created to allow everyone to create and use their own repositories full of apps they prefer to use. How awesome is that?

Angenehmer Surfen im Web mit Firefox

Der Mozilla Firefox ist ein freier und quelloffener Internetbrowser. Trotz einiger Macken immer noch zu empfehlen, erst recht im Vergleich zu den anderen Alternativen wie Chrome oder dem Internet Explorer.

Nach erfolgreicher Installation gilt es meistens, erst einmal einige wichtige Standardeinstellungen zu ändern sowie zwei wichtige Add-Ons zu installieren. Achtung: Die Einstellungen können je nach Version und Betriebssystem leicht anders aussehen. Als Vorbild habe ich eine frische Windows Installation von Firefox 65.0 genommen.

GDPR / Privacy

Platschis Blog (https://platschi.net) has been set up with "data protection by design and by default". In short:

  • Confidentiality: This blog offers SSL encryption by default.
  • Data minimization: This blog does not collect any data from the website visitor. The webserver logs are turned off.
  • Data avoidance: No cookies, no trackers, no collection of personal data. This blog might occasionally contain links to third-party websites that might track you around the web and bypass or simply ignore the GDPR. Click on outgoing links at your own risk.
  • Server Location: This website is hosted on my personal Raspberry Pi at home. I own the server and have full control over the software installed on it. Though I wouldn't trust the router provided by my internet provider.
